Avoiding Burnout in 2023: New Year Resolutions for Lawyers

new year decor on the table

As lawyers, we are all too familiar with the demands of our profession. We are constantly juggling clients, deadlines, and paperwork. It’s no wonder that so many of us feel burnt out by the end of the year. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Burnout is preventable, and there are steps we can take to avoid it in the future. Making some simple resolutions, such as engaging in self care, delegating tasks and keeping communication open, we can set ourselves up for a much more successful and sustainable career in law. Here are six resolutions that every lawyer should make for 2023:

Set realistic goals (and boundaries) for yourself, both in terms of workload and personal life

Setting realistic intentional goals is an important part of achieving success and living a meaningful life. It helps create realistic benchmarks personally and professionally so that we can balance our workload with our personal relationships. It can even improve our income without burning out. By intentionally establishing boundaries, it’s possible to have the best of both worlds: business growth and alone time. This in turn can lead to higher job satisfaction, stress management, improved relationships, and an overall feeling of happiness.

Setting boundaries is important for any professional, but especially so for lawyers. With the demands of the job, it can be hard to draw the line between work and home life. Make sure to set regular office hours and stick with them—even if that means telling clients that you won’t respond after 6 pm or on weekends. Delegating tasks also reduces the amount of tasks you must complete, which can help you stick to your set hours. It may be uncomfortable initially, but it will help you create a healthy balance between your professional and personal life. The resolution here is to reduce the risk of burnout.

Make time for self-care, including exercise, relaxation, and hobbies outside of work

Make it a resolution to avoid burnout and promote self care with a spa day. Be sure to delegate tasks ahead of time!

Incorporating self-care into our lives is essential to professional and personal development. For lawyers, it’s paramount; all too often we find ourselves working on vacation or answering emails at 2 am. Many of us are unable to completely unplug from the profession. One form of self-care is cardio, which can be done in as little as thirty minutes three times a week. Cardio helps to reduce stress levels, improve mental clarity, and promote physical wellness. Other forms of self-care could include relaxation techniques like deep breathing and stretching or prioritizing a good night’s sleep. Even dedicating time to hobbies outside of work helps us step away from career-related stressors. Focusing on creative development can help reduce negative emotions, anxiety or depression, and nurture a much-needed sense of contentment. All in all, there are a variety of ways that we can carve out time for ourselves and avoid burnout. Make self care a resolution for 2023. My favorites are exercise, relaxation (including spa days), prioritizing a full night’s sleep, and pursuing an enjoyable hobby.

Hint: booking a spa session during the week as opposed to the weekend will save you some bucks.

Stay organized with a good planner or scheduling system

For female entrepreneurs finding daily success in a busy life starts with staying organized. Utilizing a daily/monthly/yearly planner in conjunction with a calendar can help keep you on track. Scheduling daily tasks is the key to success; a cluttered or hard-to-read calendar is chaos when trying to stay productive! Another resolution is to get organized. Clio Manage, the leading case management software for lawyers helps keep attorneys organized through its intuitive planning system, which links directly to your email calendar. Clio allows you to send text reminders to clients, integrates flawlessly into Outlook email and calendar, and has a feature to allow clients to schedule consultations online. Not only does managing daily activities become simplified but also increases productivity by reducing the amount of administrative time spent scheduling meetings or sending reminders. Keeping track of clients’ court dates, meetings, and deadlines with Clio Manage ensures that no task is overlooked.

Delegate tasks, when possible, to avoid feeling overwhelmed

Knowing how to delegate tasks can be invaluable for time management, team building, and avoiding feeling overwhelmed. Outsourcing tasks if and when possible, will result in more “free” time to focus on other important tasks. It can sometimes feel uncomfortable to give responsibility away but it is necessary. Understanding the value of delegation is key to reducing stress and enabling smoother operations. This resolution is to start delegating small tasks until you’re comfortable. With time, these small tasks add up! You’ll have more time and energy which can lead to far greater long-term tangible results than may have been anticipated.

Take breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just a few minutes to step away from your desk

Taking regular breaks throughout the day is essential for maintaining focus, clarity, and productivity. Stretching your legs with a few minutes of walking or getting some fresh air can revive the mind. This allows you to return to your work with renewed energy and enthusiasm. Breaks also allow you to move around and circulate blood for improved physical well-being. A refreshed attitude and outlook can go a long way in helping you tackle any task ahead!

Can’t get out of the building? Take a walk around the office or do a few stretches in your space. Any and all movement is beneficial to avoiding burnout and providing your body and brain with a boost.

Keep communication open with your co-workers, supervisor, and clients

Communication is a key management tool for ensuring success in the workplace. It helps to ensure that everyone involved in the process – from colleagues to court staff, and even clients – is on the same page. In terms of task management or client updates, communication is essential. Let’s avoid that legal brief from slipping through the cracks and keep stress at bay. Keeping communication open is essential for any successful law firm or business. Having regular conversations or roundtables will help identify potential issues or challenges before they become problems. Making sure that your management techniques include regular check-ins can go a long way toward minimizing mistakes or missed deadlines.

If you find yourself struggling with burnout, as many of us business owners do, know that you are not alone. Take some time to assess your current situation and make changes accordingly. Set realistic goals for yourself, incorporate self-care into your routine, stay organized, delegate when possible, and take breaks throughout the day. Keep the lines of communication open with those you work with to avoid feeling isolated or resentful.
